Classical IP
Classical IP and ARP over ATM are defined in RFC-2225 (April, 1998)
Classical IP in an ATM environment deals with using
- ATM VVCs as direct substitutes for ”wires” between routers and
- Logical IP Subnets (LISs) as direct substitutes for LANs
The whole paradigm is that of LANs with ARP capability connected by routers and links between the routers
RFC-2225 does not preclude further developments of ATM, such as a single ATM network replacing a number of LANs, which requires different treatment of IP and ARP
