Bit rate & baud rate

• Bit rate: the number of bits per second transmitted

• Baud rate: the number of signalling elements per second

  • by using more than two signalling levels or some hybrid modulation technique, it is possible to represent several bits by one signalling element
  • with four signal values, each value represents two bits and thus the bit rate is two times the baud rate
